The primary role of the outer ear indeed includes sound localization. The outer ear, made up of the pinna (the visible part) and the ear canal, helps in determining the direction and distance of sounds. The unique shape of the pinna captures sound waves and directs them into the ear canal, while also contributing to the brain's ability to identify the location of sounds based on how they arrive at each ear. This is crucial for creating a three-dimensional understanding of our auditory environment.

While sound amplification and protection, transmission of auditory signals, and equalization of air pressure are important functions carried out by other parts of the ear, they do not align with the primary role of the outer ear. For example, the middle ear plays a significant role in sound transmission and amplification, and the Eustachian tube is responsible for equalizing air pressure. Thus, sound localization is the correct answer as it encapsulates a key function of the outer ear in the auditory system.
